Rawalpindi, Pakistan – South Africa completed a dominant eight-wicket victory over Pakistan in the second Test at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Thursday, drawing the two-match series 1-1. Simon Harmer's exceptional bowling performance, where he took six wickets for 50 runs, played a pivotal role in dismantling the Pakistani batting lineup.
Pakistan had won the first Test in Lahore by 93 runs. However, South Africa bounced back in Rawalpindi, showcasing their strength and depth in spin bowling. Harmer and Keshav Maharaj combined to take 17 wickets in the match.
Pakistan resumed their second innings on Day 4 at 94 for 4, with Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan at the crease. However, Harmer struck early, trapping Babar Azam leg before wicket for 50. Soon after, he dismissed Mohammad Rizwan. Harmer's efforts helped him reach 1,000 first-class wickets. Pakistan's batting order collapsed, losing their last five wickets for 33 runs and getting dismissed for 138.
Chasing a target of 68, South Africa reached 73 for 2 in just 12.3 overs. Aiden Markram led the charge with 42 off 45 balls, which included eight boundaries. Ryan Rickelton remained not out on 25, securing the win with a six. Noman Ali took both South African wickets.
Markram praised his team's resilience after the victory. He acknowledged the pressure they faced after the first Test defeat and commended the players for stepping up. Markram also highlighted the strength of South Africa's spin attack.
Harmer's match-winning performance earned him accolades. His figures of 6/50 were the best by a South African spinner over the age of 36 in a Test match. He is also the oldest South African spinner to achieve this feat in Asia.
The two teams will now compete in a three-match T20I series, starting in Rawalpindi, followed by three ODI matches in Faisalabad.
