India's Pratika Rawal Faces Injury Scare Ahead of Women's WC Semis; BCCI Provides Update
Navi Mumbai, October 26, 2025 – India's Women's Cricket World Cup campaign has been dealt a significant blow as in-form opener Pratika Rawal suffered a right ankle injury during their final group stage match against Bangladesh at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The incident occurred in the first innings of the rain-affected match, casting a shadow over India's semi-final preparations.
Rawal twisted her ankle while fielding at deep midwicket in the 21st over. Attempting to prevent a boundary off a shot from Sharmin Akter, her right foot got stuck in the turf, which had been exposed to unseasonal rains throughout the day. She immediately collapsed, clutching her ankle in obvious pain as the ball trickled away to the boundary. Teammates and the team physio quickly rushed to her aid. While a stretcher was brought onto the field, Rawal, with support from the medical staff, hobbled off the field.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has since issued an official statement regarding Rawal's injury. "Team India all-rounder Pratika Rawal sustained an injury to her knee and ankle while fielding in the first innings against Bangladesh. The BCCI Medical Team is closely monitoring her progress," the statement read. The extent of the injury is still being evaluated, and her availability for the crucial semi-final clash against Australia on Thursday remains uncertain.
Rawal's injury is a major concern for the Indian team. The 25-year-old has been a standout performer in the tournament, currently holding the position of India's second-leading run-scorer behind Smriti Mandhana, with 308 runs. Her splendid century against New Zealand in the previous game was instrumental in securing India's semi-final berth.
The Indian team has already qualified for the semi-finals of the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025. India will face Australia in the second semi-final at Navi Mumbai on October 30. The first semi-final will be between England and South Africa in Guwahati on October 29.
In Rawal's absence, Uma Chetry could be considered as a possible replacement, despite lacking the same pedigree as Rawal. During the match against Bangladesh, Amanjot Kaur opened the innings alongside Smriti Mandhana.
The match between India and Bangladesh was also affected by persistent rain. The start was delayed, reducing the match to 43 overs per side, and further rain interruptions led to a 27-overs-a-side contest. India restricted Bangladesh to 119/9 before the match was eventually called off due to rain. Both teams shared the points.
The Indian squad and fans alike will be hoping for a swift recovery for Pratika Rawal as they approach the crucial semi-final against Australia. Her presence at the top of the order would undoubtedly bolster India's chances of progressing to the final of the World Cup.
