Seattle Reign Coach Admits Using ChatGPT for Tactical Insights
Laura Harvey, head coach of the Seattle Reign in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), has revealed that she utilized the AI platform ChatGPT to inform her team's tactics during the current season. This admission has sparked debate about the role of artificial intelligence in professional sports and the extent to which coaches might rely on technology for strategic decision-making.
Harvey, a highly respected figure in the NWSL and former Arsenal Women boss, shared her experience on the Soccerish Podcast. She explained that during the off-season, she began experimenting with ChatGPT, initially posing broad questions about the Seattle Reign's identity. Intrigued by the responses, she then inquired about optimal formations against specific NWSL teams.
To her surprise, ChatGPT suggested a back-five formation for two particular teams. Harvey stated that this recommendation directly influenced her decision to implement the formation in those matches. "And for two teams, it went, 'You should play a back five.' So I did. No joke, that's why I did it," Harvey confessed. A search revealed that the Reign used a five-at-the-back formation in a 1-0 loss against Orlando Pride in April.
However, Harvey emphasized that she didn't blindly follow the AI's advice. She and her coaching staff conducted thorough research and analysis to determine the feasibility of the suggested tactics. "We researched it, we did a deep dive on it. We thought about how we could play it," she explained. After careful consideration, they decided to implement the back-five formation, which ultimately contributed to a victory. "We went for it, we liked it, it worked. We won the game. That [the ChatGPT answer] was what spurred me to look into it," Harvey said.
The use of AI in sports is not entirely new, with data analysis and statistical predictions becoming increasingly prevalent. However, Harvey's admission marks a notable instance of a top-level coach openly acknowledging the influence of a large language model like ChatGPT on tactical decisions.
The Seattle Reign are currently fourth in the NWSL standings and have secured a spot in the playoffs. The team's improved performance compared to last season, where they finished second from the bottom, has coincided with Harvey's experimentation with ChatGPT-informed tactics.
