Wasim Akram's Cricket Grievance: Reveals Dislike and Urges Boards to Address Critical Issue.

Cricket legend Wasim Akram has recently voiced his concerns about the increasing intrusion of politics into the sport, a sentiment that resonates with many fans and former players. In a candid interview with Wisden Cricket, Akram expressed his frustration with the "divisive nature" of cricket today, emphasizing that sports should remain separate from political agendas.

Akram's comments come at a time when the relationship between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is strained. Tensions escalated after the Asia Cup 2025, when Indian players reportedly refused to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts following the Pahalgam terror attack. Further controversy arose when PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi took the Asia Cup trophy after the winning Indian team declined to receive it from him.

"What I don't like in cricket is politics. I am sorry. Straightforward. Sports should be away from politics," Akram stated. He lamented that cricket has become increasingly divided, urging the International Cricket Council (ICC) and national boards to take responsibility. He believes that the growing perception of India's dominance in franchise leagues is limiting opportunities for Pakistani players, given the strained relations between the two countries.

Akram also addressed the lack of bilateral series between India and Pakistan since 2012, with the teams only meeting in ICC tournaments due to strained diplomatic relations. He optimistically stated, "I hope to see a Test series between India and Pakistan in my lifetime".

To improve the situation, Akram urged cricket boards to prioritize unity and fairness. "Pick every player from every nation. Be brave, be bigger -- but that's not happening," he said. He believes the ICC and cricket boards should ensure that every player from every nation has the opportunity to be picked, regardless of who owns the leagues or teams.

Akram criticized political interference within cricket boards, referencing his past criticism of the PCB for inconsistent selections and leadership changes. He argued that decisions should be based on performance, not connections, and that frequent reshuffles harm team stability.

The former Pakistan captain also expressed disappointment over the balance between national pride and franchise commitments, with players sometimes prioritizing short-term contracts and brand deals over representing their national teams. He questioned where the passion has gone, noting that the "hunger and emotion" that once defined the sport seem to be fading.

Akram highlighted how the rise of T20 leagues has changed players' priorities and influenced fan loyalties, weakening the sense of unity and rivalry. He urged the ICC to find a balance between international cricket and franchise leagues to preserve the sport's legacy and protect Test cricket.

Despite his criticisms, Akram remains optimistic that the next generation can restore the spirit of the game if given the right guidance and values. "Cricket is still beautiful. We just need to remember why we fell in love with it in the first place," he concluded. His message calls for unity and fairness, resonating with fans who believe it reflects the current reality of global sport.
