Paul Pogba, the former Manchester United star, is on the cusp of making his return to professional football after being named in Monaco's squad for their upcoming Ligue 1 match against Rennes. This marks a significant moment for the 32-year-old midfielder, who has been absent from the pitch for over two years.
Pogba's last appearance was on September 3, 2023, when he played for Juventus against Empoli. He came on as a substitute in the 62nd minute. Shortly after, his career took an unexpected turn when he tested positive for DHEA, a banned substance known to elevate testosterone levels. He maintained that the substance entered his system unintentionally through contaminated nutritional supplements. In February 2024, he received a four-year suspension from Italy's anti-doping authorities. However, Pogba appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which reduced the ban to 18 months, making him eligible to return in March 2025.
After his suspension, Monaco offered Pogba a two-year contract, which he accepted, vowing to rebuild his form and reputation. Since signing in June 2025, Monaco has created a detailed recovery and preparation program for Pogba, which includes biochemical analyses, cognitive tests, and intensive training to lower the risk of injury.
Monaco's coach, Sébastien Pocognoli, who was appointed on October 11, sees Pogba as a key leader for the team. Speaking at a press conference, Pocognoli highlighted the positive signs he observed during the international break, where Pogba was tested in match-like conditions.
Pogba will wear the number 8 shirt for Monaco. The club plans to gradually increase his playing time to allow him to regain his rhythm and full fitness. At his best, Pogba was considered one of the world's leading midfielders. However, his return to Juventus was hampered by injuries, with him only playing 12 games in just over a year and missing 57 games due to injury.
Monaco is currently sixth in Ligue 1. The team is aiming for a strong finish to the season and sees Pogba's experience as a valuable asset. Pogba will also be playing in the Champions League, as Monaco finished third in the league last season. This will be Pogba's first experience in Ligue 1, after leaving Le Havre for Manchester United at the age of 16.
There is speculation about whether Pogba can secure a place in the France squad for the World Cup next summer. Despite the challenges, Pogba remains motivated to represent his country.
