The Sirens' Expansion: A Look at Their Latest Talents and Strategic Additions to the Team.

The New York Sirens, one of the eight teams in the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL), have been actively reshaping their roster in preparation for the 2025-26 season. With a mix of strategic trades, free agent signings, and draft picks, the Sirens are aiming to improve their standing in the league.

Key Acquisitions and Roster Changes

One of the most notable moves was the acquisition of forward Kristin O'Neill from the Montréal Victoire. In exchange, the Sirens traded forward Abby Roque to Montréal. O'Neill, known for her two-way play, speed, and leadership skills, was drafted in the 2nd round, 7th overall, by Montréal in the Inaugural PWHL Entry Draft. During her two seasons with the Victoire, O'Neill played 53 games, recording five goals and nine assists. Her faceoff win percentage consistently remained above 50%, demonstrating her ability to gain puck possession, a crucial asset for the Sirens' offensive efforts.

The Sirens also bolstered their blue line with the addition of Jincy Roese, a free agent who signed a one-year contract. Roese previously played for the Ottawa Charge for two seasons, appearing in 51 games and recording 19 points with three goals and 16 assists. Known for her defensive skills and quickness on the ice, Roese is expected to strengthen the Sirens' defense.

In another significant move, the Sirens signed Lauren Bernard to a one-year contract. Bernard, a defender, was previously with the Toronto Sceptres as a reserve player. The 23-year-old rookie was selected in the fourth round of the 2024 draft by the Sceptres and played 15 games for Toronto, contributing one assist. Sirens General Manager Pascal Daoust praised Bernard's skating abilities, vision, and experience, highlighting her potential to develop into a high-caliber defensive player.

Adding to their defensive depth, the Sirens also signed Olivia Knowles to a 10-day Standard Player Agreement. Knowles had previously played 10 games for the Sirens after joining the team from the Toronto Sceptres' Reserve list on Dec. 6, 2024.

Draft Picks and Contract Extensions

The Sirens have also secured their 2025 PWHL Draft picks, including third overall pick Casey O'Brien. O'Brien, along with Anna Bargman, Maddi Wheeler, and Kaley Doyle, have all signed one-year contracts. General Manager Pascal Daoust described O'Brien as a true champion with the talent to become one of the top American forwards in the league, praising her skill, leadership, and presence.

In addition to new acquisitions, the Sirens have signed six players to contract extensions, including captain Micah Zandee-Hart, Maja Nylen Persson, Jaime Boubonnais, Kayle Osborne, Sarah Fillier, and Allyson Simpson.

Season Opener

The Sirens kicked off their 2025-26 season on November 22 against the Charge. This game marked a return to familiar territory for Jincy Roese, who previously played for Ottawa.

With these strategic acquisitions and signings, the New York Sirens are poised to make a strong push in the PWHL, aiming to climb the ranks and establish themselves as a competitive force in the league.
