The participation of Pakistan's hockey team in the upcoming Men's Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to be held in Rajgir, Bihar, India, from August 29 to September 9, remains uncertain. Tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly after the Pahalgam terror attack and the subsequent Operation Sindoor, have cast a shadow over the event.

Hockey India officials have stated they are in constant contact with the Indian government and will adhere to whatever instructions are provided regarding Pakistan's participation. A Hockey India official noted that given the current situation, it is unlikely that the Pakistan team will be allowed to participate. Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey has also reiterated that they would follow government directives on the matter. He added that once they receive the directives, they will inform the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF).

The Men's Asia Cup 2025 is a crucial event as it serves as a qualifying tournament for the 2026 FIH Men's Hockey World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands. The winner of the Asia Cup will secure a spot in the World Cup.

Concerns regarding Pakistan's participation arose following the Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in numerous casualties, and India's military response, Operation Sindoor. These events have led to heightened tensions and a freeze in diplomatic ties between the two nations, making it difficult for Pakistan to receive the necessary clearance to compete.

Hockey India Secretary General Bholanath Singh has stated that the country's interests take precedence. He emphasized that Hockey India will follow the government's advice, prioritizing the nation's honor above all else. Singh is also the vice-president of the AHF. He clarified that whatever the government decides, Hockey India will abide by it.

Adding to the uncertainty, India is also set to host the FIH Hockey Men's Junior World Cup 2025 in Chennai and Madurai from November 28 to December 10. Pakistan is drawn in the same pool as India for this tournament, but their participation is also doubtful.

Pakistan's participation in the Asia Cup is further complicated by reports suggesting that Indian authorities are firm on denying visas to the Pakistani team. The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has requested the AHF to guarantee visas for their contingent.

Despite the uncertainty, preparations for the Asia Cup 2025 are underway. If Pakistan is unable to participate, the decision to proceed with seven teams or invite an alternative team will be up to the AHF. The final decision rests on the Indian government's directives, taking into account the prevailing diplomatic and security considerations.
