A charity gala hosted by Yuvraj Singh's YouWeCan foundation in London raised over £1 million to support cancer patients. The event, held between India's victorious Edgbaston Test and the upcoming Lord's clash, saw the entire Indian squad, including coach Gautam Gambhir, in attendance.
The highlight of the evening was an auction where India's wicketkeeper, Rishabh Pant, made the highest individual bid of £17,000. Pant's winning bid secured him the opportunity to present an award to India's MVP, Jasprit Bumrah. He competed against other high-profile bidders for the prize. Pant's teammates watched as he fearlessly raised his paddle, showcasing the same audacious spirit he displays on the cricket field.
The fundraising event included a series of lighthearted awards. Pant was also given an award for being the last person to board the team bus. Other "Razzie" awards included Kuldeep Yadav getting cited for blaming every failure on "bad times," and Ravindra Jadeja receiving a nod as the most frequent DRS requester. Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir served as the jury members for these tongue-in-cheek honors. Gill shared an amusing anecdote about Mohammed Siraj's overzealous appeals for LBW decisions, drawing laughter from the Indian team.
Beyond the auctions and awards, the gala was a blend of nostalgia and camaraderie. Virat Kohli reminisced about an ODI in Cuttack where Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni rescued the Indian innings, reminding him of his childhood. Yuvraj Singh also playfully teased his former teammate, Gautam Gambhir, suggesting that there should be a bid to make Gambhir smile.
Shubman Gill's arrival at the event was also a significant moment. He was greeted with a standing ovation from cricket legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, and Chris Gayle, as well as BCCI officials. The master of ceremonies highlighted Gill's recent achievements as the new Indian captain.
Yuvraj Singh also took the opportunity to praise chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir for their contributions to the Indian team's success. He acknowledged their efforts in India's recent achievements, including reaching the ODI World Cup final, winning the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy, and their historic win at Edgbaston.
The event also saw the presence of Sara Tendulkar, and her sighting with Shubman Gill led to social media buzz.
