India's narrow 22-run loss to England in the third Test at Lord's has sparked debate and disappointment among fans and former cricketers alike. The defeat, which saw England take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series, was particularly painful given India's strong position earlier in the match. Chasing a target of 193, India's batting line-up faltered, ultimately being bowled out for 170.

Ravindra Jadeja's resilient unbeaten 61 kept India's hopes alive, but a "tactical misjudgement" in the final stages allowed England to secure the win. With just 23 runs required, Jadeja shielded Mohammed Siraj, exposing him to a full over from off-spinner Shoaib Bashir. Siraj was bowled, leaving Jadeja stranded and India defeated.

Former India captain Anil Kumble criticized Jadeja's tactics, suggesting that Jadeja should have taken more risks against England's spinners. Kumble stated that exposing Siraj to Bashir at such a crucial juncture was a tactical error. He felt Jadeja, with his experience and skill, could have targeted Bashir, Root, or Woakes earlier to shift the momentum. Kumble acknowledged Jadeja's calculated strike rotation but believed he could have been more proactive.

Sunil Gavaskar offered a nuanced perspective, noting that Jadeja's hand was somewhat forced by batting with lower-order players, leading him to prioritize strike management. Gavaskar noted Jadeja was trying to farm the strike as much as possible and was cautious about playing lofted shots on that pitch.

Sourav Ganguly also expressed disappointment with India's batting performance, stating that the team should have chased down the target of 193. Ganguly lauded Jadeja's performance, recognizing his fighting spirit and valuable runs in both innings. He acknowledged Jadeja's crucial role in the team across all formats and predicted that Jadeja would continue to be an integral part of the Indian team as long as he maintains his form.

The loss was particularly stinging, as India had fought back from 82/6 to get within touching distance of victory. Jadeja's partnerships with Nitish Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj kept India in the game until the final moments. Despite the defeat, Jadeja's efforts were commendable, as he shepherded the tailenders and brought India to the doorstep of victory.

Other factors contributed to India's loss. Kumble pointed to the 65 extras conceded by India, including 32 in the first innings, and Siraj being unsettled after a blow from Jofra Archer. Some observers also criticized the "lack of intent" from some of the Indian batsmen. Herschelle Gibbs, former South Africa batter, felt that a lack of intent cost India the game and clarified his comment was directed towards Jasprit Bumrah.

Shubman Gill expressed disappointment but also pride in the team's performance, acknowledging that they could have applied themselves better. Despite the loss, the series has been gripping, with every match going down to the wire. The fourth Test begins on July 23 in Manchester, where India will aim to level the series.
