The fifth and final Test of the series between England and India at The Oval has been set up for a dramatic conclusion after captivating performances from both sides. England closed Day 4 at 339/6, needing just 35 more runs to win, but with India having clawed their way back into the contest with some fierce pace bowling.

England's chase of 374 was initially guided by a magnificent 195-run partnership between Harry Brook and Joe Root. Brook, known for his aggressive strokeplay, reached his century in just 91 balls, hitting 12 fours and two sixes. Root, ever the picture of calmness and class, also compiled a century, his 39th in Test cricket. Their contrasting styles complemented each other perfectly, putting England in a commanding position.

Brook's innings was full of intent, including smashing 27 runs in a mere eight balls at one stage. He even lofted Akash Deep for a six despite overcast conditions. However, his luck ran out when he attempted another big shot off Deep and his bat flew out of his hands, with Mohammed Siraj completing the catch at mid-off.

Root reached his century with a boundary off Siraj, but soon after edged behind off Prasidh Krishna. The departure of Brook and Root triggered a mini-collapse, with England losing three wickets for just 36 runs. Krishna also dismissed Jacob Bethell, further tilting the momentum towards India.

Earlier in the day, India's pace attack had made early inroads. Siraj, who dismissed Zak Crawley on Day 3, continued his fiery spell, while Krishna removed Ben Duckett. Siraj then trapped Ollie Pope lbw, putting England under pressure.

The Indian team's strategy involved Siraj focusing on full, swinging deliveries aimed at the stumps, while Krishna concentrated on hitting the deck hard and moving the ball off the seam. This approach proved effective as the day progressed, especially with the older ball.

The day ended with Jamie Smith and Jamie Overton at the crease, tasked with the responsibility of scoring the remaining runs. However, bad light and rain brought a premature end to the day's play, leaving the match tantalizingly poised.

India's comeback was fueled by the determination of their pace bowlers, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Akash Deep. Despite an early fielding error from Siraj, where he stepped on the boundary rope while catching Brook, giving away six runs, the Indian bowlers remained focused.

The new ball is due in just over three overs, which could further assist the Indian pacers. However, Chris Woakes' potential unavailability due to a shoulder injury could hamper England's chances.

With England needing 35 runs and India requiring four wickets, the stage is set for a thrilling final day at The Oval. An Indian victory would level the series 2-2, while an English win would secure a 3-1 series victory.
