Viktor Gyökeres' Efforts Not Enough: Arsenal's Attack Stumbles Against Villarreal, Impacted by Pépé's Performance.

Arsenal's pre-season preparations suffered a setback as they fell to a 3-2 defeat against Villarreal at the Emirates Stadium. The match, characterized by defensive lapses and a failure to convert dominance into goals, saw Viktor Gyökeres make his first start for the Gunners, while former Arsenal player Nicolas Pépé returned to haunt his old club with the opening goal for Villarreal.

Gyökeres, Arsenal's high-profile summer signing from Sporting Lisbon, labored upfront, failing to make a significant impact in his hour-long appearance. While he showed glimpses of his potential, including a fierce shot that tested Villarreal's goalkeeper, he struggled to find the cutting edge that Arsenal desperately needed. The Swedish striker's arrival has been met with considerable excitement, with many viewing him as the missing piece in Arsenal's quest for silverware. Gyökeres himself has expressed his eagerness to contribute to Arsenal's success, citing the club's attacking style and clear ambition as key factors in his decision to join. He also wears the number 14 shirt, previously worn by Thierry Henry.

Arsenal started the match brightly, controlling possession and dictating the tempo. However, Villarreal drew first blood against the run of play when Pépé capitalized on slack defending to fire home from close range in the 16th minute. Pépé, who joined Villarreal on a free transfer in August 2024, refrained from celebrating against his former club. The Ivorian winger's time at Arsenal was largely considered underwhelming, given the club-record £72 million fee they paid for him in 2019. He signed a new contract with Villarreal on July 16, 2025.

Villarreal doubled their lead in the 33rd minute through Karl Etta Eyong, further compounding Arsenal's woes. However, Christian Nørgaard pulled a goal back for Arsenal before halftime, heading in from a corner.

In the second half, Arnaut Danjuma restored Villarreal's two-goal advantage with a well-taken strike in the 68th minute. Martin Ødegaard reduced the deficit again from the penalty spot after a foul on Max Dowman, a 15-year-old midfielder who impressed after coming off the bench. Despite late pressure, Arsenal failed to find an equalizer, slumping to their second defeat in six days.

The match highlighted Arsenal's need for sharper finishing and greater defensive solidity as the Premier League season approaches. While Gyökeres's first start was not a resounding success, it is too early to draw definitive conclusions about his ability to adapt to the Premier League. The striker has the qualities to thrive in Arsenal's system, and he will likely improve as he integrates further into the team.

For Pépé, the goal against his former club was a reminder of his capabilities, even if he failed to consistently deliver during his time in North London. Now at Villarreal, the 30-year-old will be hoping to revive his career and showcase the talent that once made him one of the most sought-after wingers in Europe.
