Akash Deep's journey to the international cricket stage is a story of resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to a promise he made to himself. This promise manifested in a gritty performance at the Oval during the recent Test series against England, where his contributions with the bat rocked England's self-belief and played a crucial role in India drawing the series 2-2.

Born on December 15, 1996, in Dehri, Bihar, Akash Deep faced numerous challenges early in life. His father, Ramji Singh, a school teacher, initially wanted him to focus on academics and pursue a stable government job. Cricket, in their small town, wasn't seen as a viable career path. Akash, however, harbored a deep passion for the game, fueled by India's 2007 T20 World Cup victory. He secretly trained and played cricket, facing opposition from his parents and neighbors who discouraged their children from associating with him due to his cricketing pursuits.

Tragedy struck when Akash lost his father and elder brother within six months of each other. This placed immense responsibility on his young shoulders, forcing him to become the family's primary breadwinner. He had to leave cricket for three years to support his mother and sisters. Despite these hardships, Akash never lost sight of his dream.

In 2010, Akash moved to Durgapur, West Bengal, to join a cricket academy. He initially started as a batsman but switched to fast bowling at the suggestion of his coaches. He honed his skills under the guidance of Ranadeb Bose and Sourasish Lahiri. He credits Mohammed Shami for advising him to focus on his mindset and physical conditioning. Akash made his first-class debut for Bengal in the 2019-20 Ranji Trophy.

Akash Deep's international debut came in the fourth Test against England in 2024. However, it was his performance in the fifth and final Test at The Oval in 2025 that truly showcased his mettle. Promoted to nightwatchman on Day 2, Akash displayed remarkable resilience and determination. Speaking to Cheteshwar Pujara after the day's play, Akash revealed his mindset: he was determined not to throw his wicket away and to help his team reach a strong position.

Akash forged a crucial century stand with Yashasvi Jaiswal, frustrating the English bowlers. He scored a gritty 66 off 94 deliveries, contributing significantly to India's total of 396 in the second innings. His performance as a nightwatchman was the second-highest score by any nightwatchman for India. More than the runs, it was the two hours he spent at the crease, battling it out, that proved invaluable for the team.

India won the Oval Test by six runs to draw the Test series 2-2. Mohammed Siraj's fiery spell and crucial wickets sealed the victory. Siraj was named Player of the Match. Harry Brook was named Player of the Series. Akash Deep's contribution with the bat was a turning point, shifting the momentum in India's favor. His resilience and the promise he made to himself not to give his wicket away easily, rattled the English team and contributed significantly to India's historic series draw.

Following his successful tour of England, Akash Deep celebrated by purchasing a new car, a dream come true, and shared the joyous occasion with his family on social media. He also acknowledged the crucial tips he received from Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, and MS Dhoni, which helped him bring out his best during the series.

Akash Deep’s family includes his mother, Ladduma Devi, and three elder sisters. He also had an elder brother, Dhiraj, who passed away. His family has been a constant source of support, with his mother playing a crucial role in encouraging him to pursue his cricketing dreams. His sister, Akhand Jyoti Singh, and brother-in-law, Nitish Singh, expressed their immense pride in his achievements.

Akash Deep's story is an inspiration to aspiring cricketers, especially those from small towns with limited resources. His journey demonstrates that with unwavering determination, hard work, and a commitment to one's promise, anything is possible.
