Darwin Nunez's time at Liverpool has come to an end, with the Uruguayan striker sealing a £46.2 million move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal. The transfer brings to a close a somewhat polarizing chapter in Nunez's career, following his arrival at Anfield from Benfica in 2022.

Liverpool and Al-Hilal have reached an agreement in principle for the transfer, with the fee potentially rising to £56.6 million with add-ons. Nunez is expected to finalize personal terms and complete his move to the Saudi Pro League shortly. Reports indicate that Nunez has already bid farewell to his Liverpool teammates.

Nunez's departure comes after a mixed spell at Liverpool. While he displayed flashes of brilliance and became a popular figure with fans, his performances were often inconsistent. In 143 appearances for the Reds, he scored 40 goals and won both the Premier League and Carabao Cup. His contributions included a memorable late double against Newcastle United in the 2023-24 season and a crucial stoppage-time winner against Brentford in January 2025.

Liverpool are already looking to reinvest the funds from Nunez's sale in their squad. The club is reportedly seeking an attacker who can immediately step into the starting lineup. Liverpool had previously made a £110 million bid for Newcastle United's Alexander Isak, which was rejected. They remain admirers of the Swedish international, although Newcastle value him at £150 million.

Despite the significant outlay this summer, Liverpool's manager Arne Slot has declared himself happy with the current squad. The club has already made several high-profile signings, including Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz, and Hugo Ekitike. With Nunez's sale, Liverpool's net spending for the summer will decrease to €112.5 million.

Al-Hilal, one of the top clubs in Saudi Arabia, are adding Nunez to their already impressive squad. However, Nunez could face an immediate setback as Al-Hilal will be banned from the 2026-27 Saudi Super Cup. This means he would have one less chance at silverware next season.

Nunez's move to Al-Hilal is the latest in a series of high-profile transfers to the Saudi Pro League. He will reportedly earn a substantial salary of £20 million per year, although this is still less than what Erling Haaland earns at Manchester City.

Liverpool have been linked with Real Madrid winger Rodrygo as a potential replacement for Nunez. The club is also reportedly monitoring Newcastle's Alexander Isak and Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze. Newcastle are said to be opening talks with Paris Saint-Germain striker Randal Kolo Muani, which could pave the way for Isak's departure.
