Former New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira has announced his candidacy for Congress in Texas' 21st Congressional District in the 2026 midterm elections. Teixeira, a Republican, made the announcement on Thursday, August 28, 2025, stating his commitment to defending the principles that make Texas strong and America exceptional.
Teixeira is vying for the seat currently held by GOP Rep. Chip Roy, who is not seeking re-election and is instead running for Texas Attorney General. Teixeira praised Roy for his "unwavering courage" in representing the district. The 21st Congressional District encompasses parts of the San Antonio and Austin suburbs, extending into the Hill Country and cities like Fredericksburg and Kerrville. This district is considered a Republican stronghold.
In his campaign announcement, Teixeira emphasized his support for President Donald Trump and his "America First" agenda. He pledges to secure the border, "end woke radical indoctrination," and defend the Second Amendment. Teixeira's campaign website outlines his commitment to working with Trump and Republicans to bolster the economy, support life, and secure the southern border.
Teixeira, 45, was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and played 14 seasons in Major League Baseball. He made his MLB debut with the Texas Rangers in 2003. During his four full seasons in Arlington, Teixeira earned one All-Star Game selection and two Gold Glove Awards. He was later traded to the Atlanta Braves in 2007 and then had a short stint with the Los Angeles Angels before joining the New York Yankees in 2009. With the Yankees, he won a World Series title in 2009, along with two more All-Star appearances and three additional Gold Glove awards. A three-time All-Star, Teixeira also won three Silver Slugger Awards. Over his career, he hit 409 home runs and maintained a .269 batting average.
Teixeira moved back to Texas in 2021 with his wife and three children. He stated that he returned to Texas to raise his children and "pursue new business opportunities, supporting education and Christian ministries". He has also supported Republican Gov. Greg Abbott and the conservative Texas Public Policy Foundation.
Teixeira is not the only former Yankee to publicly support Donald Trump. Johnny Damon and Paul O'Neill have also endorsed Trump, and Mariano Rivera endorsed Trump last year.
Teixeira will face at least one opponent in the Republican primary: Daniel Betts, who was the Republican nominee for Travis County district attorney in 2024. The primary is scheduled for March 2026, with the general election in November 2026.
