Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) coach Luis Enrique is set to undergo surgery after a cycling accident on Friday. The club confirmed that the 55-year-old Spaniard suffered a fractured collarbone and was treated by emergency services before being taken to the hospital. PSG released a statement on X, formerly Twitter, expressing their support and wishing him a swift recovery, with further updates to be shared in due course.
The cause of the accident is currently unknown. Fortunately, no other serious injuries were reported. Enrique was reportedly enjoying some time off during the international break when the accident occurred.
Enrique, who took charge of PSG in the summer of 2023, has had a successful tenure with the club. He guided the Parisians to Ligue 1 titles in both of his seasons and led them to their first Champions League victory last season, defeating Inter Milan 5-0 in the final. In addition to the Champions League title, Enrique also led PSG to victory in the UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham last month. PSG has also won their opening three games of the Ligue 1 season. After losing the Club World Cup final to Chelsea in July, PSG has had a strong start to the new season.
It is not yet clear how long Enrique will be away from the sidelines. PSG's next game is at home against Lens in Ligue 1 on September 14, following the international break. Three days later, they are scheduled to begin their Champions League title defense against Atalanta. The team also has a Champions League match against Enrique's former club, Barcelona.
Luis Enrique is known to be an avid cyclist and has participated in several international mountain bike races. He was also seen cycling during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In the past he participated in the Absa Cape Epic in South Africa, cycling approximately 700 kilometers over eight days.
The NHS suggests that a fractured collarbone can take anywhere from 8 to 12 weeks to heal. It remains to be seen how soon Enrique will be able to return to his duties.
