In a move that has thrilled hockey fans, the Pittsburgh Penguins have announced the signing of legendary goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury to a professional tryout (PTO) contract. This signals a special homecoming for the beloved veteran, who is set to don the black and gold once more.
Fleury will join the team for practice on September 26, 2025, and is scheduled to play in parts of the Penguins' preseason game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on September 27 at PPG Paints Arena. This appearance will offer fans a chance to celebrate Fleury's remarkable career and his indelible impact on the city of Pittsburgh.
Penguins President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kyle Dubas expressed the organization's excitement in welcoming Fleury back. "The entire Penguins organization is honored to welcome Marc-Andre Fleury back to the ice in Pittsburgh," Dubas stated. He emphasized Fleury's significance to the team, the fans, and the city, highlighting the person he is and the example he set throughout his career. Dubas described the moment as a "full-circle" celebration, allowing Fleury and his family to experience this special occasion in front of the Pittsburgh faithful.
Marc-Andre Fleury, born on November 28, 1984, was drafted first overall by the Penguins in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He spent 13 seasons with the team, from 2003 to 2017, becoming a cornerstone of the franchise. During his tenure in Pittsburgh, Fleury achieved remarkable success, winning three Stanley Cups in 2009, 2016, and 2017. He also holds numerous records for goaltenders in the Penguins' organization, including the most games played (691), wins (375), and shutouts (44).
After his time with the Penguins, Fleury went on to play for the Vegas Golden Knights, Chicago Blackhawks, and Minnesota Wild. He continued to achieve milestones, becoming the third goaltender in NHL history to reach 500 victories, joining the ranks of Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur. He is also the fourth goaltender to play 1,000 games, along with Roy, Brodeur, and Roberto Luongo.
Despite initial reports of retirement at the end of the 2024-25 season, Fleury's representation was contacted by five teams on the opening day of NHL free agency with contract offers for the 2025-26 season. Ultimately, he chose to return to Pittsburgh on a PTO, allowing him to celebrate his career where it began.
While this PTO is viewed primarily as a ceremonial and motivational move, Fleury's experience could provide invaluable mentorship to younger players. Dubas noted that everyone has witnessed how beloved and respected Fleury is within the hockey world. The Penguins clearly feel that Fleury and his family deserve the opportunity to celebrate where it all started.
Tickets for the September 27th preseason game are now available on the Penguins' official website.
