In a minor transaction completed just before their series finale on Wednesday, the Milwaukee Brewers acquired outfielder Steward Berroa from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for cash considerations. To make room for Berroa on the roster, the Brewers designated right-handed pitcher Elvin Rodriguez for assignment.

Berroa, who was immediately optioned to Triple-A Nashville, was placed on the injured list (IL) due to right shoulder bursitis. This injury has reportedly been affecting him for several weeks. The unusual timing of the trade, so close to game time, and the fact that the Brewers acquired an injured player, drew attention and confusion from fans online.

The Dodgers had previously acquired Berroa for cash in May. He hasn't played in the minor leagues since mid-June and was designated for assignment by Los Angeles about a week prior to the trade. For the Dodgers, this move clears up their minor league outfield situation and provides some luxury tax relief.

For the Brewers, this is viewed as a low-cost acquisition that bolsters their outfield depth in the minor leagues as they approach the trade deadline and aim for a strong finish to the season.

Elvin Rodriguez had appeared in a limited number of games for the Brewers this season, with varied results. Designating him for assignment means the Brewers have removed him from their 40-man roster. He will now be subject to waivers, and if he clears waivers, the Brewers can assign him to the minor leagues or release him.

This trade occurred while the Dodgers and Brewers were facing off in the final game of their series. Although some trades in baseball history have involved players changing dugouts mid-game, Berroa will not be joining the Brewers immediately due to his injured status.
