FIDE President Praises India, Explains Goa's Selection For The Chess World Cup Hosting.

Panjim, Goa: International Chess Federation (FIDE) President Arkady Dvorkovich has lauded India as a "modern powerhouse" in the world of chess, emphasizing the nation's pivotal role in the sport's global structure. His remarks came ahead of the highly anticipated FIDE World Cup 2025, which is set to take place in Goa from October 30 to November 27.

Dvorkovich highlighted that the decision to host the prestigious tournament in Goa reflects India's emergence as a central pillar in the global chess community. He expressed confidence in the All India Chess Federation and local organizers, noting the continuous progress in the preparations for the nearly month-long event.

The FIDE World Cup 2025 will witness the participation of 206 top chess players from 80 countries, all vying for a share of the USD 2 million prize fund. More importantly, the top three finishers will secure coveted qualification spots for the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament, which serves as the gateway to the World Chess Championship match. This marks the return of the World Cup to India after more than two decades, with the last edition held in Hyderabad in 2002.

India's prominence in the chess world has grown significantly in recent years. The country boasts D. Gukesh, the reigning World Champion, as well as a host of other talented players, including Arjun Erigaisi, R. Praggnanandhaa, and Nihal Sarin. India has also achieved team titles at the Olympiad in both the Open and Women's sections.

The tournament is structured as an eight-round, single-elimination knockout event. Each match consists of two classical games played under standard time controls. In case of a tie, the players will engage in a series of rapid and blitz tie-breaks to determine the winner. The top 50 seeds receive a bye into the second round, while the remaining competitors begin their journey on November 1st.

The FIDE World Cup 2025 is not just a competition; it's a celebration of India's rich culture and its growing influence in the world of chess. Chief Minister of Goa, Dr. Pramod Sawant, unveiled the official logo and anthem for the event, capturing the essence of Goa's vibrant spirit and the strategic elegance of chess. The anthem, titled "It's Your Move," features the voice of Daler Mehndi and includes appearances by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and top Indian grandmasters.

The event will be held at the Resort Rio, a five-star luxury venue in North Goa, offering a fitting stage for the prestigious tournament. Besides the competition, participants and visitors are encouraged to explore Goa's attractions and immerse themselves in its unique cultural identity.

As the FIDE World Cup 2025 approaches, the global chess community eagerly anticipates witnessing the clash of titans and the emergence of new stars on Indian soil. The tournament promises to be a landmark event, solidifying India's position as a powerhouse in the world of chess.
