Despite emerging speculation linking Nazem Kadri to potential trades with other teams, NHL insider Darren Dreger suggests that such discussions are premature. Kadri, a veteran center currently playing for the Calgary Flames, has reportedly garnered interest from several Canadian teams, including the Montreal Canadiens, Vancouver Canucks, and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Dreger points out that these teams could benefit from adding a player of Kadri's caliber to their roster. However, he suggests that the current buzz surrounding a potential trade is more a product of media speculation than concrete developments or serious negotiations.
The Calgary Flames have had a disappointing start to the 2025-26 season, which has fueled rumors of potential roster changes. Kadri's name has surfaced in trade discussions, along with Rasmus Andersson, MacKenzie Weegar, and Blake Coleman. Kadri has also drawn media attention after his contract included a 13-team no-trade list this season.
However, Dreger emphasizes that the Flames are currently focused on the ongoing season rather than actively exploring major trades. Any potential move involving Kadri would likely be considered closer to the trade deadline, assuming the Flames decide to pursue a deal. Kadri remains a key component of the Flames' core, and despite their slow start, the team is not giving up on the season.
Elliotte Friedman mentioned that the Flames will likely not trade Kadri before he reaches his 1,000th NHL game. So far, Kadri has played 995 games. Friedman also confirmed that Kadri has a 13-team no-trade list, providing the Flames with some flexibility in potential trade talks.
Kadri himself addressed the speculation in a recent interview, stating that he is not bothered by the rumors and remains focused on winning. In a game against the New York Rangers, Kadri scored a goal and an assist, marking his first multi-point game of the season. He now has seven points in ten games and continues to center the top line. Last season, Kadri had 35 goals and 67 points.
While other teams may inquire about Kadri for a top-six role, the Flames have struggled on both offense and defense. They are averaging two goals per game while allowing 3.5, and both their power play and penalty kill need improvement.
TSN's Hockey Insiders also discussed Kadri's situation, noting that his future in Calgary likely depends on the team's ability to turn their season around. Dreger stated that Kadri loves Calgary, and a trade is unlikely unless the Flames decide on a roster reconstruction. He acknowledged the significant interest in Kadri but reiterated that the timing is not yet right for a move.
