FA Cup Upsets: Carlisle's Shock Victory Over Reading and Gateshead's Triumph Against AFC Wimbledon.

The FA Cup first round delivered its fair share of drama on Saturday, with upsets and late goals defining the day for several clubs. Among the standout results, National League side Carlisle United produced a stunning comeback to defeat League One's Reading, while fellow fifth-tier club Gateshead secured a comfortable victory over AFC Wimbledon.

Carlisle United's remarkable 3-2 extra-time win against Reading was undoubtedly the highlight of the day. Substitute Regan Linney emerged as the hero, bagging a sensational hat-trick to complete an improbable turnaround. Reading appeared to be in control after goals from Lewis Wing and Mark O'Mahony, but Linney struck twice in added time to force extra time. He then completed his hat-trick in the 94th minute, sending the Carlisle faithful into raptures.

Gateshead also caused an upset, defeating League One's AFC Wimbledon 2-0 away from home. Goals either side of half-time from Kain Adom and Fenton John secured the victory for the Heed, who sit below Wimbledon in the league structure. AFC Wimbledon have progressed from eight of their last nine FA Cup first round ties, failing only against Doncaster Rovers in 2019-20 in this run. Gateshead have been eliminated in each of their last 10 FA Cup ties against Football League opposition since a 2-0 away win at Halifax Town in the first round back in 2000-01.

Elsewhere, Boreham Wood added to the day's upsets with a 3-0 victory over League Two's Crawley. Matt Rush and Abdul Abdulmalik scored either side of a Zak Brunt penalty to seal a comfortable win for the National League side. Hemel Hempstead of the National League South gave 2013 winners Wigan a major scare before losing 5-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.
