Verma and Sharma shine as India secures historic first Women's World Cup victory.

Navi Mumbai, November 2, 2025 - India etched their names in cricketing history, winning their maiden Women's World Cup title after a thrilling 52-run victory over South Africa at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium. The victory sparked celebrations across the nation, as the Women in Blue finally clinched the coveted trophy after near misses in previous editions.

Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma emerged as the heroes of the final, delivering outstanding performances with both bat and ball. After South Africa won the toss and opted to bowl, India posted a competitive total of 298/7, with Verma leading the charge with a scintillating 87 off 78 balls. Her innings, which included seven fours and two sixes, provided the perfect platform for India's innings after a commanding 104-run opening stand with Smriti Mandhana (45).

Deepti Sharma then steadied the innings, contributing a valuable 58 off 58 balls. Richa Ghosh added a late flourish with a lively cameo of 34 off 24 balls, propelling India towards a competitive score. Ayabonga Khaka was the pick of the South African bowlers, claiming 3/58.

Chasing 299 for victory, South Africa started steadily, with Laura Wolvaardt leading the charge. However, India's bowlers fought back strongly, with Deepti Sharma leading the attack. Amanjot Kaur's direct hit led to an early breakthrough, running out Tazmin Brits. Verma then shifted the momentum with two crucial wickets, dismissing Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp in quick succession.

Wolvaardt continued to resist, scoring a magnificent century. However, her dismissal by Deepti Sharma triggered a collapse, as South Africa slumped from 209/5 to 246 all out. Deepti Sharma finished with figures of 5/39, earning her the Player of the Tournament award. Verma's all-round performance earned her the Player of the Match award.

The victory was particularly sweet for Verma, who had endured heartbreak in the 2020 T20 World Cup final. This time, she played a pivotal role in India's triumph, showcasing her talent and determination on the biggest stage.

The atmosphere at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium was electric, with a packed crowd of 45,000 cheering on the Indian team. The win sparked celebrations across the country, with fans taking to the streets to celebrate the historic moment.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and various other organizations announced cash rewards for the team, recognizing their outstanding achievement. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the team's victory, calling it an inspiration for generations.

This victory marks a new era for women's cricket in India, inspiring countless young girls to take up the sport. The Women in Blue have etched their names in history, joining Australia, England, and New Zealand as the only countries to have won the Women's World Cup.
