Cristiano Ronaldo's Retirement Crossroads: Star Player Contemplates Future Amidst Difficult Career Decisions.

Ronaldo Reflects on Career Twilight, Retirement a 'Difficult' Decision

Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese superstar, has provided a significant update regarding his future in football, acknowledging that the decision to retire is proving to be a "difficult" one. At 40 years old, Ronaldo is currently under contract with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia until the summer of 2027, a deal that would extend his playing career beyond the age of 42. Despite his advancing years, he continues to represent Portugal on the international stage, holding the record for the most goals scored in men's international football, with 143 goals in 225 appearances.

In a recent interview with Piers Morgan, Ronaldo admitted that he is contemplating life after football. "It will be tough, of course," Ronaldo stated, acknowledging the emotional challenges that retirement will bring. "It will be difficult, yes. Probably I will cry, yes… It will be very, very difficult but I've prepared my future since (I was) 25, 26, 27 years old. So I think I will be capable to support that pressure". While he has been preparing for this transition for many years, he recognizes the unique void that football will leave in his life. "Nothing will compare to the adrenaline we have for football to score a goal," Ronaldo said.

When asked about a specific timeline for his retirement, Ronaldo remained elusive, stating, "Soon – but I think I will be prepared". He had previously mentioned in June 2025 that he lives "day by day" and that there is "no day decided for my retirement". He emphasized that he will continue playing "until the day I [don't feel] like this".

While Ronaldo did not reveal specific post-retirement plans, he hinted that coaching might not be his immediate path. Instead, he expressed a desire to dedicate more time to his family and explore other passions. Despite the uncertainty, he stated that he has been preparing for his future since his mid-twenties and feels equipped to handle the transition.

Nani, Ronaldo's former teammate from Manchester United and Portugal, speculated that Ronaldo might retire immediately if he leads Portugal to victory in the 2026 World Cup. Nani also suggested that Ronaldo could follow in the footsteps of David Beckham by becoming a club owner in Major League Soccer (MLS). While committed to growing the sport in Saudi Arabia, there has been speculation about Ronaldo potentially playing in the United States or returning to his former club, Sporting CP, later in his career.

Adding another layer to the story, Ronaldo's physical fitness remains a key factor in his decision-making. According to tests conducted earlier this year, his "biological age" was revealed to be approximately 28.9 years. "That means I'm going to be playing football for another 10 years!" he joked on a podcast, highlighting his commitment to maintaining peak physical condition.

Ronaldo's dedication to the Portuguese national team remains unwavering. Following Portugal's victory in the UEFA Nations League final against Spain in June 2025, he hinted at his desire to continue playing for his country as long as he avoids serious injuries. "You know how old I am already. Obviously, I'm closer to the end than I was at the beginning, but I have to enjoy every moment. If I don't get seriously injured, I'll keep going," Ronaldo told reporters.
