Vitali Kravtsov Ends Vancouver Canucks Tenure, Opts for KHL Return Following NHL Experience

Vitali Kravtsov's second stint with the Vancouver Canucks has come to an abrupt end, with the team placing the forward on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract. The move signals the end of Kravtsov's time in North America, as he is expected to return to Russia and sign with Traktor Chelyabinsk of the KHL.

Kravtsov, a former ninth overall pick by the New York Rangers in the 2018 NHL Draft, signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Canucks in August, hoping to revitalize his NHL career. He had spent the previous two seasons with Traktor Chelyabinsk in the KHL, where he had a strong 2024-25 season, posting 27 goals and 31 assists in 66 games with a +31 rating. Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin had expressed optimism about Kravtsov's potential, noting his strong KHL season and anticipating his performance at training camp.

However, Kravtsov struggled to make an impact during training camp and the preseason. He played in only one preseason game and was subsequently assigned to the Abbotsford Canucks of the AHL. In 10 AHL games, he recorded just one goal and three assists with a -7 rating. His limited impact at 5-on-5 and being outscored 3-1 during his shifts further solidified the Canucks' decision to seek other options. With limited opportunities for NHL playing time and other players being favored amid injury recalls, the Canucks decided to allow Kravtsov to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

Kravtsov will forfeit the remainder of his $450,000 salary. Despite the financial setback, he is expected to earn more money playing in Russia. A return to Traktor Chelyabinsk seems imminent, with reports suggesting a likely three-year deal.

Kravtsov's NHL career has been marked by inconsistency and unfulfilled potential. Drafted by the Rangers in 2018, he had difficulty establishing himself in their lineup. In February 2023, the Rangers traded him to the Canucks for forward William Lockwood and a seventh-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. He registered one goal and two points in 16 games with Vancouver. As an impending restricted free agent in May 2023, Kravtsov opted to return to Russia, signing a two-year agreement with Traktor Chelyabinsk through 2025.

In 64 NHL games over three seasons, Kravtsov has recorded six goals and six assists. While he showcased his offensive talent in the KHL, including a standout season in 2024-25, he was unable to translate that success to the NHL level. Now, at 25 years old, he will head back to the KHL to continue his hockey career.
