The New Jersey Devils are navigating a series of injury challenges while also preparing for a change in their jersey lineup. Here's the latest on player injuries and the future of the team's third jersey.
Injury Updates
The Devils' promising start to the season, with a 10-4-0 record and an undefeated home record, has been tempered by a series of injuries.
- Dougie Hamilton: During the game against the Montreal Canadiens, Dougie Hamilton sustained a lower-body injury and did not return. Coach Sheldon Keefe has announced that Hamilton will be out for at least a week, and his return will depend on his recovery progress. The loss of Hamilton is a significant blow to the team's defense, especially with Brett Pesce and Johnathan Kovacevic already sidelined. In Hamilton's absence, Colton White has been recalled from the Utica Comets. Prior to his injury, Hamilton had recorded four goals and seven points in 13 games, showing improvement in his defensive game.
- Connor Brown: Forward Connor Brown remains out of the lineup with an undisclosed upper-body injury. He has already missed three consecutive games, and Coach Keefe indicated that Brown is still not feeling well and will require more time to recover. Before his injury, Brown had contributed five goals and one assist in 11 games. Cody Glass has been activated from injured reserve and has taken Brown's place in the lineup.
- Brett Pesce: Brett Pesce has been placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. He is expected to be out until at least Thanksgiving. Pesce's absence is a challenge to the Devils' defensive stability, as he has been a key shutdown defenseman, averaging 21:20 of ice time.
- Johnathan Kovacevic: Defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic is still recovering from offseason knee surgery and is not expected to return until at least January.
- Cody Glass: Center Cody Glass has returned to the lineup after recovering from an upper-body injury. He had missed seven games after being injured on October 21 against Toronto. Upon his return, Glass scored a goal in the game against Montreal.
- Evgenii Dadonov: Evgenii Dadonov is also currently sidelined.
Third Jersey Update
The New Jersey Devils will retire their black "Jersey" third jersey after the 2025-26 season. The team has confirmed that this will be the final season for the "Jersey" jersey, which was first introduced in November 2021. The "Jersey" jersey will be worn for 11 home games during the 2025-26 season, starting on November 24 against the Detroit Red Wings and concluding on April 12 against the Ottawa Senators. The jersey features a black-and-white design with a hint of red, a lace-up collar, and a white scripted "Jersey" crest with a red drop shadow. The 21 stripes on the sweater pay tribute to New Jersey's 21 counties, with five stripes over the left shoulder representing the Devils' five retired numbers. A new third jersey is reportedly possible in the future, although no timeline has been established.
