Kolkata, India - India's cricket captain, Shubman Gill, has been discharged from Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital in Kolkata after receiving treatment for a neck injury sustained during the first Test match against South Africa at Eden Gardens. The injury occurred on Saturday, during India's first innings, and forced him to retire hurt.
Gill felt the pain in his neck immediately after executing a sweep shot for four off South Africa spinner Simon Harmer. He received initial treatment from the team's medical staff on the field but was later taken to a private hospital for further evaluation and scans. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Gill was admitted to the hospital for examination.
The injury ruled Gill out of the remainder of the first Test, a blow to the Indian side, who went on to lose the match by 30 runs. India were bowled out for just 93 while chasing 124 on a sharply turning track.
Following the match, India's head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed that Gill's condition was being closely monitored, with the team physio assessing his fitness. Gambhir stated that the physios would make a call on Gill's availability for the second Test.
The extent of Gill's injury and the recovery timeline remain uncertain. The Indian management will continue to monitor Gill's condition closely, with a final decision on his participation in the second Test expected following the physio's assessment.
The second Test against South Africa is scheduled to begin on November 22 in Guwahati. India will be keen to bounce back in Guwahati to level the series.
Meanwhile, Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Sourav Ganguly visited Shubman Gill in the hospital on Sunday and later criticised the Eden Gardens surface, calling it “not the best Test wicket”. Ganguly also expressed his full support for Gautam Gambhir.
