Mohammad Nabi: BCCI's Support Gave Afghanistan Cricket Significant Exposure and Recognition on the Global Stage.

Veteran Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi has lauded the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for its significant role in the development of cricket in Afghanistan. Speaking from Dubai, where he is representing the Dubai Capitals in the ILT20 2025-26, Nabi emphasized the crucial support provided by the BCCI, which includes infrastructural development and providing exposure to Afghan players through the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Nabi highlighted that around 9-10 Afghan players have had the opportunity to participate in the IPL, gaining invaluable experience that has significantly contributed to their performance on the national team. He acknowledged the long journey of Afghanistan cricket since 2001, marked by both highs and lows, but expressed satisfaction with the progress made in elevating the team to a competitive level in international cricket.

"BCCI helped a lot during that journey," Nabi stated, acknowledging the backing from the Indian government as well. He specifically mentioned the construction of a cricket ground in Kandahar. This infrastructural support, combined with the exposure gained from the IPL, has been instrumental in Afghanistan's rise in the global cricket arena.

Looking ahead, Nabi is optimistic about Afghanistan's performance in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, expressing confidence that the subcontinent pitches will favor their players. He also welcomed the potential inclusion of Afghanistan in the expanded ICC World Test Championship, viewing it as a valuable opportunity for the team to compete against top-tier cricketing nations.

Nabi's sentiments echo similar expressions of gratitude from the Afghan cricket fraternity in the past. Following Afghanistan and Ireland attaining full membership status by the ICC in 2017, Nabi voiced his hope that Afghanistan would play its first Test match against India, recognizing the immense support from the BCCI as vital to their progress. He noted that without the BCCI's support, reaching that stage would not have been possible.

The relationship between Afghanistan cricket and the BCCI extends beyond providing opportunities in the IPL. The BCCI has also offered financial assistance to improve cricket facilities and infrastructure in Afghanistan. Furthermore, suggestions have been made for the BCCI to appoint senior Indian players as mentors for the Afghan team and organize more bilateral series between the two nations in India.

The support from the BCCI has not only helped develop the skills of Afghan cricketers but has also provided them with a platform to showcase their talent and gain recognition on the international stage. This exposure has, in turn, inspired a new generation of cricketers in Afghanistan and contributed to the growth of the sport in the country. As Afghanistan continues to make strides in international cricket, the contribution of the BCCI remains a crucial factor in their success.
