Islanders Edge Lightning in Thrilling Shootout After Tampa Bay's Late Rally Falls Short, Winning 3-2.

The New York Islanders held off a late comeback attempt by the Tampa Bay Lightning, ultimately securing a 3-2 shootout victory on Saturday at UBS Arena. The win, which swept the season series against the Lightning, capped off a memorable day that began with Pat LaFontaine's induction into the Islanders Hall of Fame.

The Islanders jumped out to an early lead in the first period, with rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer scoring a power-play goal at 3:05. Anthony Duclair and Mathew Barzal assisted on the play. Fellow rookie Calum Ritchie extended the lead to 2-0 at 10:16, with Duclair again providing the assist.

Tampa Bay began to mount their comeback in the second period. Darren Raddysh scored a power-play goal of his own at 10:13, assisted by Nikita Kucherov and Jake Guentzel, narrowing the score to 2-1. JJ Moser then tied the game at 3:20 of the third period, with Kucherov and Brayden Point assisting.

Neither team was able to break the tie in regulation, sending the game into overtime. Despite chances on both ends, the score remained deadlocked, leading to a shootout.

In the shootout, Mathew Barzal and Emil Heineman both scored for the Islanders, while Ilya Sorokin stopped two of the three Lightning shooters to seal the victory. Sorokin's performance earned him the first star of the game and his third "Iron Man" mask of the season, an honor given to the team's most valuable player for the game. He made a total of 32 saves on 34 shots in the game. Jonas Johansson, the Lightning goalie, stopped 15 of the 17 shots he faced.

"He's been huge all year," said Anthony Duclair about Sorokin's performance. "He's been backing us up and having our backs whenever there's a breakdown in the d-zone".

Islanders Head Coach Patrick Roy praised Sorokin, stating, "Even from the day I got here, I knew we had one of the best goaltenders in the game and I still believe that".

The Islanders were opportunistic early, scoring twice on their first three shots. The Lightning outshot the Islanders 34-17. The Lightning's power-play goal snapped a 16-for-16 penalty kill streak for the Islanders over their previous seven games.

The Lightning will host the Florida Panthers on Monday. The Islanders will visit the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday.
