Eddie Howe Cautious About Manchester Visit Despite Newcastle's Recent Success Against United.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is tempering expectations ahead of their Boxing Day trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United, despite his side's recent strong record against the Red Devils. In a pre-match press conference, Howe acknowledged Manchester United's improvements this season, stating, "Statistically, they're a lot stronger than last year". He further added, "They've seen big improvements in their general performances. They've been competitive and, attacking wise, they have some big threats".

Howe's caution comes even though Newcastle has won five of their last six matches against Manchester United. Recent results have certainly favored the Magpies, including two victories at Old Trafford. Last season, Newcastle secured a 2-0 Premier League win in December 2024 and a dominant 3-0 victory in the EFL Cup at the same venue.

However, Howe is wary of placing too much emphasis on past successes. "Our record's been good against Manchester United in recent games but that counts for nothing in this game," Howe said. He stressed the importance of treating the upcoming match as an independent event, especially considering the changes within the Manchester United squad.

Newcastle's recent form has been somewhat inconsistent, with the team currently sitting in 11th place in the Premier League. They are also contending with a significant injury crisis, with several key players ruled out for the Boxing Day clash.

Howe confirmed that Tino Livramento's injury is still being assessed, expressing hope that it is "not serious at all". He also provided updates on Sven Botman and Nick Pope, stating Botman is "doing well" and "not too far away" from returning to training, while there's a "chance" Pope might train before the game. However, Howe will be without several other first-team players, including Dan Burn, Kieran Trippier, Jamaal Lascelles, Emil Krafth and Will Osula.

Despite the injury concerns, Howe remains positive. He acknowledged the team has had a "strange feeling" due to having a longer break than usual between games, giving players a chance to "come down from what is always a high". However, he stressed the importance of not losing their rhythm and ensuring they feel regenerated for the match.

Looking ahead to the game, Howe anticipates a tough challenge. "I think it'll be a really good game, a tough game, for us and a good opportunity at Christmas to enjoy the magnitude of these games," he stated. He also acknowledged the special atmosphere expected at Old Trafford and believes Newcastle will face "a slightly different Man United" than in previous encounters.

The match is the only Premier League fixture scheduled for Boxing Day, adding to the anticipation surrounding the game. A victory for Newcastle would see them draw level on points with Manchester United, while a win for the home side could see them move into the top five, depending on other results.
