Seattle, WA - The Seattle Kraken defeated the Calgary Flames by a score of 5-1 on January 5, 2026, at the Scotiabank Saddledome, marking their second meeting of the 2025-26 season. The Flames had won their previous encounter on December 18 with a score of 4-2.
The scoring commenced early in the first period when Adam Klapka of the Flames capitalized on a rebound at 6:33, following an initial shot by Ryan Lomberg that was saved by Kraken goaltender Philipp Grubauer. However, the Kraken quickly responded in the second period. At 1:57 into the second period, Ryan Winterton retrieved the puck at the blue line after the Flames failed to clear it. Winterton took a shot, and after the save by Dustin Wolf and another rebound, Jacob Melanson elevated the puck into the net to score his first NHL goal, tying the game 1-1. Melanson's goal extended his point streak to four games.
The Kraken took their first lead early in the third period. Ben Meyers passed the puck to Shane Wright who was near the net, and Wright scored, putting the Kraken ahead 2-1. Shortly after, at 5:12 into the third, Vince Dunn increased Seattle's lead to 3-1. Kaapo Kakko passed the puck to Dunn, who shot from between the two faceoff circles. With just under three minutes left in the game, Freddie Gaudreau scored on an empty net, further solidifying the Kraken's lead. Matty Beniers then scored, bringing the final score to 5-1 for the Kraken.
Grubauer's performance was a key factor in the Kraken's victory, as he made 41 saves with a save percentage of .976. Flames goalie Dustin Wolf made 26 saves on 30 shots.
