Michael Carrick is set to be appointed as interim coach for Manchester United until the end of the season. The former Manchester United midfielder is expected to sign the contract on Tuesday. This decision comes after the departure of Ruben Amorim, who was sacked earlier this month following 14 months in charge.
Carrick, a former player with a trophy-laden career at Old Trafford, brings significant United pedigree, having made 464 appearances and winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League. He also served as a first-team coach. His previous managerial experience includes a stint at second-tier club Middlesbrough from 2022 to 2025. During his first season, he guided the team to the Championship playoffs.
Carrick previously served as caretaker manager in 2021 following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's dismissal. He managed United for three games after Solskjær’s sacking in November 2021, leading United to two wins and a draw.
Carrick's coaching team will include former England assistant coach Steve Holland and Jonathan Woodgate. Travis Binnion, who was promoted from his role as under-21s lead coach, and Jonny Evans will also be retained on the staff. Darren Fletcher was offered a first-team role under Carrick but has decided to focus on the under-18s.
Manchester United is currently seventh in the league table, 17 points behind the leader Arsenal. They have been eliminated from both domestic cups and are on course for a second successive trophyless season. The defeat to Brighton in the FA Cup has resulted in United facing their shortest season since 1914-15, with just 40 games to play.
Carrick was selected ahead of other candidates, including Solskjaer, after interviews conducted by Omar Berrada, United's chief executive, and Jason Wilcox, the director of football. His first match as interim manager will be against Manchester City on Saturday.
By appointing Carrick in a short-term role, United is giving itself time to find a long-term replacement for Amorim.
