Sai Sudharsan was absent from the field for India on Day 3 of the second Test against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued an update regarding his absence, stating that it was a precautionary measure following an impact injury sustained while attempting a catch on Day 2.
The incident occurred on Saturday when Sudharsan was fielding at forward short leg during the West Indies' first innings. Off a delivery from Ravindra Jadeja, West Indies opener John Campbell played a sweep shot, and the ball struck Sudharsan's hand as he attempted a catch. Despite successfully completing the catch to dismiss Campbell, Sudharsan immediately appeared to be in discomfort. He received medical attention and left the field, with Devdutt Padikkal substituting for him for the remainder of the day.
The BCCI's statement clarified that the injury was "not serious" and that Sudharsan is "doing fine". The medical team is continuing to monitor him.
Prior to the injury, Sudharsan had made a valuable contribution with the bat in India's first innings, scoring 87 runs off 165 deliveries. He formed a 193-run partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal, helping India reach a commanding position. His innings ended when he was dismissed by Jomel Warrican. India declared their first innings at 518/5, with centuries from Jaiswal and Shubman Gill.
It remains to be seen if Sudharsan will be available to bat in the second innings, should the need arise. At the time of reporting, it appears unlikely that India will need to bat again in the Test.
