Quinn Hughes Reaches Canucks' Record: A Defenceman's Dominance in Points History, Cementing His Legacy.

Vancouver Canucks fans have a new reason to celebrate as Quinn Hughes has become the franchise's all-time leader in points by a defenseman. The record-breaking moment occurred on Saturday against the Edmonton Oilers when Hughes earned an assist, pushing his career total to 410 points.

Hughes surpassed the previous record holder, Alex Edler, who had held the title since March 3, 2018. Edler amassed 409 points in 925 games before departing to the Los Angeles Kings in 2022. In contrast, Hughes reached the 410-point milestone in just 435 games.

The 25-year-old Hughes is only at the beginning of his prime. By the time he reaches Edler's age of 34, he could be approaching 800 career points. The only remaining milestones for Hughes to conquer are all-time goals and games played, as he already holds the franchise record for assists by a defenseman with 352, a comfortable lead over Edler's 310.

Drafted seventh overall by the Canucks in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, Hughes' impact was immediately evident, earning him a nomination for the Calder Memorial Trophy in 2020 as the league's best rookie. In the 2024-25 season, Hughes tallied 76 points in 68 games and was named a Norris Trophy finalist for the second time. He eventually won the James Norris Memorial Trophy in 2024 as the NHL's best defenseman.

Before joining the Canucks, Hughes played for the University of Michigan, where he set a new record for the most assists by a freshman defenseman. Internationally, he has represented the United States at the World Junior Championships and the IIHF World Championship, winning bronze in 2018.

Hughes comes from a family deeply rooted in hockey. His brothers, Jack and Luke, were also top NHL draft picks, and his mother played for the United States women's national ice hockey team. His father also has a background in hockey, serving as the director of player development for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

With his current trajectory, Hughes is solidifying his place as one of the greatest defensemen in Canucks history.
