Rangers Football Club has officially announced the appointment of Danny Röhl as their new head coach on a two-and-a-half-year deal. The 36-year-old German manager arrives at Ibrox to replace Russell Martin, who was sacked after a mere 123 days in charge.
Röhl's appointment concludes a turbulent search for a new manager, with reports suggesting Rangers had initially pursued other candidates. Discussions with Kevin Muscat reportedly broke down, and Steven Gerrard also ruled himself out of the running. Röhl had previously removed himself from consideration last week but made a return to negotiations after the deal with Muscat fell through.
"It is a huge privilege to be taking on the role of Head Coach at such an incredible club, recognised around the world," Röhl told the club's website. "I know it has been a difficult start to the season, but there is still so much to play for in four competitions, and my staff and I will give it everything to reward the supporters and the club". He added, "The expectations are huge and I love this challenge because I set high standards for myself and the team too".
Röhl's only prior experience as a first-team manager was at Sheffield Wednesday, where he left in the summer amidst off-field issues. He joined the Owls in October 2023, becoming the youngest manager in the English Football League. During his tenure, he steered the club to Championship survival, which led to a new contract until 2027. Before Sheffield Wednesday, Röhl built an impressive coaching resume, including roles at RB Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich, and as an assistant manager for the German national team. At Bayern Munich, he served as assistant manager to Hansi Flick, contributing to a period of great success, including winning the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and Champions League titles in 2020.
Röhl began his coaching career as a video analyst with RB Leipzig's youth sides before progressing to coaching roles. He later became a first-team coach at RB Leipzig in 2016. In 2018, he moved to Southampton.
Röhl is expected to be in the dugout for Thursday's Europa League clash against SK Brann. Rangers currently sit in sixth place in the Scottish Premiership.
