The United States is officially bidding to host the 2031 FIFA Women's World Cup in conjunction with Mexico, Costa Rica, and Jamaica. This marks the first time in the competition's history that four nations would jointly host the tournament.
The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) announced the addition of Mexico, Costa Rica, and Jamaica to the proposal on Monday. The USSF and the Mexican Football Federation had previously withdrawn their joint bid for the 2027 Women's World Cup in April 2024, opting to concentrate on securing the 2031 event. FIFA subsequently selected Brazil as the host for the 2027 tournament.
FIFA stated in April that the USSF was the sole bidder for the 2031 tournament, with the possibility of including regional partners from North and Central America and the Caribbean. The formal decision by FIFA is expected at its congress on April 30, 2026, in Vancouver, British Columbia.
According to U.S. Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone, this joint bid presents an extraordinary opportunity to host the "biggest and most impactful Women's World Cup in history". She believes it will inspire a new generation of fans and foster the growth of women's soccer throughout the region and worldwide. The aim is to establish a legacy that extends beyond 2031, setting a new global benchmark for the sport.
CONCACAF President and FIFA Vice-President Victor Montagliani has welcomed the joint bid. He stated that the Confederation's commitment to women's football has never been stronger. Hosting the FIFA Women's World Cup 2031 will build on this momentum, inspiring future generations of players and fans across North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.
The 2031 tournament will be the first to feature 48 teams. The United States hosted the 1999 tournament, which saw an expansion from 12 to 16 teams, with 1.2 million fans attending the 32 matches. The U.S. also stepped in to host the 2003 tournament on short notice after the original host, China, was unable to proceed due to the SARS outbreak.
The joint bid is scheduled to be submitted to FIFA next month. Details regarding potential host cities and venues will be released at a later date. A bid from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland is the sole submission for the 2035 tournament.
