Igor Tudor lamented Juventus's missed opportunities as they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu. Jude Bellingham's second-half goal secured the win for the Spanish giants, maintaining their perfect record in the Champions League.
Juventus, still searching for their first victory in the tournament, displayed flashes of brilliance but ultimately failed to capitalize on crucial chances. Tudor's side currently sits 24th in the standings with two points, after drawing their opening matches against Borussia Dortmund and Villarreal.
Real Madrid, under the guidance of Xabi Alonso, continued their dominant form in the competition. They previously secured victories against Olympique de Marseille and Kairat Almaty. With this win, Real Madrid has nine points from three games.
The match began with both sides displaying tactical discipline. Juventus defended cautiously, employing a five-man backline and seeking opportunities on the counter-attack. Real Madrid struggled to break down the resolute Juventus defense in the first half, with efforts from Brahim Diaz, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Arda Guler being thwarted by Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio. Eder Militao's attempt also sailed narrowly over the bar. Di Gregorio's best save of the first half came just before the interval, denying Kylian Mbappe with a combination of his shoulder and face.
Juventus had a golden opportunity to take the lead early in the second half when Dusan Vlahovic broke through on goal, outpacing Militao. However, his shot was expertly saved by an onrushing Thibaut Courtois.
Real Madrid's persistence paid off in the 57th minute when Vinícius Júnior took on three Juventus players and created space for a shot that rebounded off the post, allowing Bellingham to slot home the decisive goal. It was Bellingham's first goal since the Club World Cup in June, marking his return to scoring form after recovering from shoulder surgery.
Despite going behind, Juventus continued to fight, but they struggled to create any meaningful chances. Mbappe could have extended Real Madrid's lead, but Di Gregorio made another smart save. In the final minutes, Filip Kostic's powerful strike from the edge of the box was pushed away by Courtois, preserving Real Madrid's narrow lead.
Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso praised Bellingham's performance, saying, "I'm very happy for Jude. After the injury, he needed a good match. In addition to scoring, he also played very well. He deserved a match like this to feel comfortable again". Courtois, who was playing his 300th match with Real Madrid, also hailed Bellingham's performance. "He's starting to play at his best again," Courtois said. "He had a great game".
The victory extends Real Madrid's winning streak and strengthens their position in the group. Meanwhile, Juventus's winless run extends to seven consecutive matches in all competitions.
