Wasim Akram recently expressed his views on Pakistan's performance against Oman, highlighting a familiar tendency for dramatic collapses. According to Akram, Pakistan's cricket team often displays a lack of composure, leading to unexpected setbacks.
Akram's critique came after Pakistan's match against Oman, where a sudden slump in wickets caused concern among fans and analysts alike. He said that such instances are typical of Pakistan's unpredictable nature on the field. He humorously stated that he stepped away for a quick bite, and when he returned, the team had suffered a mini-collapse.
Akram noted that the team recovered well after the collapse due to the partnership between Sahibzada Farhan and Mohammad Haris. He added that when facing unfamiliar bowlers, batsmen should take their time to assess the situation before accelerating the scoring.
In February 2025, Akram had criticized the Pakistan team following their defeat against India in the ICC Champions Trophy Group A match. He lambasted the team for playing "archaic cricket" and called for "drastic steps" to change the team's approach. He suggested bringing in young, fearless cricketers to build a team for the future, specifically targeting the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Akram has also expressed concerns about Pakistan's bowling attack, comparing their average unfavorably to teams like Oman and the USA. He pointed out that in the last five ODIs, Pakistani bowlers had only managed to take 24 wickets at an average of 60, which he found unacceptable. Akram also held Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan partly responsible for the team's struggles, stating that he needs to know what kind of match-winners he needs.
Shoaib Akhtar echoed similar sentiments, blasting the team's management as "brainless and clueless" and criticizing the team's selection process. He felt the team lacked clear direction and that the players were as clueless as the management. Muhammad Hafeez called for the axing of the three main pacers: Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah.
