KKR Should Spend Big on Former MI/RCB Star to Replace Russell; Could Cost Up to 35 Crore

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are under pressure to make a splash at the upcoming IPL 2026 auction, with all eyes on finding a suitable replacement for the recently retired Andre Russell. The explosive West Indian all-rounder, who has now taken on the role of KKR's "Power Coach", leaves a massive void in the team's batting and bowling lineup.

With the largest purse of ₹64.30 crore, KKR has the financial muscle to secure a high-impact player. According to several experts, including former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan and commentator Aakash Chopra, Australian all-rounder Cameron Green should be at the top of KKR's wishlist. Some analysts are suggesting KKR should be willing to spend as much as ₹35 crore for Green.

Green, who previously played for Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, is seen as a like-for-like replacement for Russell due to his athleticism, power-hitting, and seam-bowling abilities. "Cameron Green is a top-quality all-rounder, and with KKR entering the auction with a sizeable purse, they will surely target him," said Pathan. "With Andre Russell retired, Green offers a like-for-like replacement – someone who can contribute with both bat and ball, though he'll probably bat a bit higher in the order".

Chopra has even called Green an "upgraded version of Russell," highlighting his ability to strengthen the middle order and add valuable bowling depth. Green's T20I form in 2025 has been stellar, with 258 runs at an average of 43.00 and a strike rate of over 168, along with consistent bowling at 135–140 kmph, making him a complete package for KKR.

However, KKR is not the only team interested in Green. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are also expected to bid for the Australian all-rounder, known for their preference for reliable all-rounders. With multiple teams vying for his signature, KKR may have to break the bank to secure Green's services.

While Green appears to be the primary target, KKR may also consider other options. New Zealand's Michael Bracewell and Sri Lanka's Dasun Shanaka are potential alternatives who can provide balance and versatility to the team. Liam Livingstone and Glenn Maxwell are other names that have been discussed as potential replacements for Russell.

KKR's decision to release several high-profile players, including Venkatesh Iyer, Quinton de Kock, Moeen Ali, Anrich Nortje, and Spencer Johnson, has opened up massive space in both the purse and the overseas quota. Along with Russell, the franchise has parted ways with these players to rebuild a new core around the likes of Varun Chakravarthy, Sunil Narine, Ajinkya Rahane and Harshit Rana.

The IPL 2026 mini-auction is scheduled for December 16, and KKR's strategy will be closely watched as they aim to fill the void left by Andre Russell and build a team capable of challenging for the title. With a significant purse and a clear need for a dynamic all-rounder, KKR is expected to be aggressive in their pursuit of Cameron Green and other potential replacements.
