East Bengal FC have finished top of their group in the inaugural SAFF Women's Club Championship 2025, currently underway in Kathmandu, Nepal. The Indian Women's League champions have displayed dominant form throughout the group stage, securing their place in the final rounds of the competition.
The SAFF Women's Club Championship 2025 is a historic event, being the first international women's club competition organized by the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF). The tournament, held from December 5 to 20, features five clubs from South Asia, including East Bengal FC (India), APF Football Club (Nepal), Nasrin Sports Academy (Bangladesh), Transport United Ladies FC (Bhutan), and Karachi City Football Club (Pakistan).
East Bengal's journey to the top of the group has been marked by impressive performances. They began their campaign with a 4-0 victory over Transport United Ladies FC of Bhutan on December 8. Their squad boasts a mix of retained players and new foreign signings, including Ugandan national team forward Fazila Ikwaput. Prior to the tournament, East Bengal had a landmark continental outing in the AFC Women's Champions League, where they secured a 3-1 victory against Iran's Bam Khatoon FC, becoming the first Indian club to win an AWCL group stage match. This experience has given them a competitive edge, exposing them to a higher level of play than they might typically encounter in the SAFF region.
The tournament follows a single round-robin format, with the top two teams advancing to the final. As the top team in their group, East Bengal is now set to compete for the championship title. The team's success in the SAFF Women's Club Championship highlights the growing success of women's football in the region. SAFF aims to provide a more competitive environment for its Member Associations through this championship.
