The Buffalo Sabres have made a significant addition to their front office, hiring former Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin as their new associate general manager. The announcement, reported by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman on Saturday night, marks another change in what has been a busy week for the Sabres' management team.
Bergevin's arrival follows a series of front office moves, including the firing of general manager Kevyn Adams, who was replaced by Jarmo Kekalainen on Monday. Kekalainen wasted no time in reshaping his staff, also firing associate GM Jason Karmanos on Saturday.
Bergevin, 59, brings a wealth of experience to Buffalo. He most recently served as a senior advisor to the general manager of the Los Angeles Kings, a position he had held since 2022. Prior to his time in Los Angeles, Bergevin spent nearly a decade as the general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, from 2012 to 2021. During his tenure in Montreal, he guided the team to the Stanley Cup Final in 2021.
Before his time in Montreal, Bergevin held various roles with the Chicago Blackhawks, including assistant general manager during their 2010 Stanley Cup-winning season. He was also named as the general manager of the Canadian team for this year's Spengler Cup.
The Sabres are currently enduring the NHL's longest playoff drought, which extends back 14 seasons to 2011. As of today, they are in last place in the Atlantic Division and are on track to miss the playoffs for a 15th consecutive season. The organization hopes that the changes in the front office, including the addition of Bergevin, will help them turn the corner and return to contention.
