New Football League: Hong Kong Could Face China and Chinese Taipei More Often With New Tournament

Hong Kong's footballers could soon see more frequent match-ups against teams from mainland China and Chinese Taipei, potentially through a new league or expanded competition. This development could provide Hong Kong players with increased exposure and competitive opportunities.

Currently, Hong Kong boasts a professional football league, the Hong Kong Premier League, featuring teams such as Kitchee and Eastern. Historically, a "Hong Kong League XI," comprised of top players from the league, would participate in exhibition matches. However, in recent years, the Hong Kong Football Association has prioritized fielding the national team in these matches to provide players with more international experience.

The possibility of Hong Kong clubs joining the Chinese Super League (CSL) has been discussed, with some coaches suggesting it would benefit the development of Hong Kong football. Playing against mainland sides more regularly could push Hong Kong teams to improve. However, challenges exist, as players leaving Hong Kong for mainland China have been cautioned to carefully consider their moves. Factors such as securing a spot on the right team and being valued as a player are crucial for a successful transition.

Historically, policies regarding Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwanese players in Chinese football leagues have varied. There have been periods where players from these regions were considered foreign players, while at other times, they were treated as local players under certain conditions. As of 2018, Chinese clubs could register one non-naturalized player from Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwan as a native player, provided they were first registered as a professional in their respective football associations and met specific residency or citizenship requirements.

Hong Kong has a notable history of competition against Chinese Taipei. In a match on December 14, 2024, Hong Kong secured a 2-1 victory over Chinese Taipei in the EAFF E-1 Football Championship. Overall, Hong Kong has won 7 of 10 games played against Chinese Taipei since 2007, with Chinese Taipei winning 1 and 2 games ending in a draw.

Increased interaction with mainland Chinese and Taiwanese teams could lead to a revitalization of Hong Kong football, offering players more opportunities to test their skills and potentially attracting greater investment in the sport within the region.
