Tampa Bay Lightning Sign J.J. Moser To Eight-Year Extension
The Tampa Bay Lightning have solidified their defensive core by signing defenseman J.J. Moser to an eight-year contract extension. The deal, announced Saturday evening, is worth $54 million, carrying an average annual value of $6.75 million. The extension will keep Moser with the Lightning through the 2033-34 season.
Moser, 25, is currently in his second season with Tampa Bay. He joined the team as part of the trade that sent defenseman Mikhail Sergachev elsewhere two summers ago. As he was headed toward restricted free agency with arbitration rights after this season, this extension ensures he remains a key part of the Lightning's future.
This season, Moser has three goals and 12 points in 34 games. While his offensive statistics might not fully reflect his overall value, his underlying metrics paint a picture of a highly effective defenseman.
Moser's even-strength metrics are among the league's best. Among defensemen who have played at least 200 minutes this season, Moser leads the league in on-ice Goals% with 73.8%. To provide context, Cale Makar, a Norris Trophy favorite, holds second place with 72.7%. He also boasts a 57.8% CorsiFor% and a 94.6% on-ice save percentage, leading all Lightning defensemen by a significant margin in both categories.
General Manager Julien BriseBois has made it a priority to secure Moser's long-term future with the Lightning. With this extension, the Lightning have a solid defensive foundation with Victor Hedman and Ryan McDonagh signed through the 2028-29 season, and Erik Černák locked in through the 2030-31 campaign. If Moser maintains his current level of play, this contract could prove to be a significant asset for the team.
