Calvin Pickard's stellar performance on Monday night has thrown a wrench into the Edmonton Oilers' goaltending plans. Pickard stopped 41 of 42 shots in a 3-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets, showcasing his best game of the season. This performance comes at a crucial time, with the Oilers navigating a crowded crease and dealing with injuries.

The Oilers' goaltending situation has been in flux. In December, they traded Stuart Skinner to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Tristan Jarry. However, Jarry is currently sidelined with a lower-body injury. In addition, Connor Ingram was recalled on an emergency basis. With Jarry injured, Pickard and Ingram are the goalies the Oilers are relying on.

Pickard's recent play has been a bright spot amidst the uncertainty. Despite a rough start to the 2025-26 season, the veteran goalie has shown resilience. "There's some time between starts here," Pickard admitted. "But I'm confident. I'm in my third year here, I'm confident behind the group and just trying to do my job". He also noted, "I like where my game is at, just want to keep that going".

Against the Jets, Pickard was "outstanding," according to head coach Kris Knoblauch. Knoblauch emphasized the importance of not discarding such performances. Pickard's performance wasn't just statistically impressive; it was a display of composure and focus from the opening faceoff. The Jets generated numerous high-quality scoring chances, but Pickard remained unfazed.

The Oilers were out-chanced and, at times, outplayed. Max Jones and Jack Roslovic scored for the Oilers, and Connor McDavid extended his point streak to 13 games with an assist on Zach Hyman's empty-netter. However, Pickard was the story of the night.

Pickard's strong play may lead the Oilers to re-evaluate their goaltending plans. With Jarry expected to be out for a few weeks, Pickard has an opportunity to solidify his position on the roster. Ingram has played well, going 2-1 in three starts. Pickard's performance against the Jets further complicates the situation.

Pickard's journey to this point has been one of perseverance. Born in Moncton, N.B., he moved to Winnipeg at a young age, where his parents still reside. Before the game against the Jets, Pickard enjoyed a special Sunday dinner with his family. "Steak, ham, perogies, rice, Caesar salad. It was a Pickard special. It was good," Pickard said. Perhaps that meal provided the fuel for his outstanding performance.

Looking ahead, the Oilers will need continued strong goaltending as they push for a playoff spot. Pickard has shown he is capable of providing that. His play has earned him the confidence of his coach and teammates. The Oilers' next game is at home against the Boston Bruins on Wednesday night.
