Canada has advanced to the semifinals of the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship with a dominant 7–1 victory over Slovakia. The Canadians showcased their offensive prowess, scoring five goals in the first period alone.
The scoring commenced at 13:58 of the first period when Cole Reschny found the back of the net, assisted by Keaton Verhoeff and Cole Beaudoin. Less than a minute later, Tij Iginla doubled the lead at 14:42, capitalizing on a play set up by Porter Martone. Michael Misa further extended Canada's lead at 16:11, with Zayne Parekh and Ethan MacKenzie contributing with assists. Sam O'Reilly added another goal at 17:03, assisted by Carson Carels and Caleb Desnoyers. Before the end of the first period, Brady Martin scored a power-play goal at 19:47, assisted by Gavin McKenna and Michael Hage, giving Canada a commanding 5–0 lead.
Canada continued to apply pressure in the second period. At 9:31, Porter Martone increased the lead to 6–0, assisted by Verhoeff and Misa. Just over a minute later, at 10:41, Beaudoin scored, with assists from Sam O'Reilly and Parekh. Jan Chovan managed to get Slovakia on the scoreboard later in the second period, breaking Jack Ivankovic's shutout bid. Ivankovic stopped 21 shots in the game. The temperature of the game lowered in the third period. A four-minute penalty on Parekh for high-sticking gave Canada something to play for late in the frame, and they killed it off.
Team Canada will face Czechia in the semifinal on Sunday. This marks Canada's first advancement to the semifinals since 2023, following consecutive quarterfinal losses to Czechia. The bronze and gold medal games will take place on Monday.
