Endrick Aims for 2026 World Cup: Lyon Loan Move Fuels Brazil Squad Return Ambitions

Real Madrid's young Brazilian star Endrick has joined Lyon on loan in a move aimed at boosting his chances of representing Brazil at the 2026 World Cup. The Ligue 1 club officially welcomed Endrick on December 23, 2025, with the expectation that he would join the squad starting December 29.

Endrick's transfer to Real Madrid occurred in July 2024 for a reported fee of 47.5 million euros ($55.9 million). Since then, he has made 40 appearances for the Spanish giants, scoring seven goals. However, his playing time has been limited this season under new head coach Xabi Alonso, who replaced Carlo Ancelotti. Facing fierce competition from forwards like Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr., Endrick found his opportunities scarce, leading to his frustration and desire for a loan move. Alonso acknowledged Endrick's need for consistent playing time and supported the decision to allow him to gain experience in a competitive league like Ligue 1.

The loan agreement with Lyon is a paid deal, reportedly worth up to one million euros, and extends until the end of the season. It doesn't include an option to buy, signaling Real Madrid's continued faith in Endrick as part of their long-term plans. Lyon hopes that Endrick will energize their attack, which has struggled to find consistency.

Endrick has expressed concerns about securing his place in the Brazil squad for the 2026 World Cup, stating his "fear" of missing out on the tournament due to limited playing time at Real Madrid. He has earned 14 caps for the Brazil national team, scoring three goals, but his last goal for the Selecao was in June of the previous year, with only one cap earned in 2025. By joining Lyon, Endrick aims to play a prominent role and demonstrate his abilities to the national team selectors.

Lyon coach Paulo Fonseca has praised Endrick's adaptation to the team, noting that he is settling in well and is highly motivated. Fonseca highlighted Endrick's technical skills, speed, and individual initiative, expressing confidence that he will bring a different dimension to Lyon's attack. While Endrick missed Lyon's first game after the winter break due to financial deadlines, he is expected to make his debut on January 11 in a French Cup match against Lille.
