The New York Rangers' season is spiraling, and the captaincy of J.T. Miller is under intense scrutiny. After a promising start, the team has struggled mightily, currently sitting seventh in the Metropolitan Division with a 20-21-6 record. Their recent performance includes a humiliating 10-2 defeat at the hands of the Boston Bruins, followed by a 4-2 loss to the Seattle Kraken. The Rangers have only managed two regulation wins in their last 18 games, a troubling sign for a team with playoff aspirations.

Miller, appointed the 29th captain in franchise history at the beginning of the season, is facing criticism for his leadership during this difficult stretch. While General Manager Chris Drury praised Miller's leadership qualities at the time of his appointment, some fans questioned the decision, citing Miller's history of locker room conflicts during his time with the Vancouver Canucks. Coach Mike Sullivan defended the decision, stating that Miller had matured and that his "fiery personality" was an asset. However, as the losses mount, those same qualities are now being viewed with increasing skepticism.

The team's struggles are multifaceted. Their offense has been anemic, ranking among the worst in the league with only 122 goals scored in 47 games. The power play, typically a strength for the Rangers, has also faltered. At home, the team has been particularly poor, scoring just 39 goals in 20 games at Madison Square Garden and being shut out six times. While the Rangers surprisingly had one of the best defenses in the NHL earlier in the season, that is no longer the case.

Injuries to key players, including star goaltender Igor Shesterkin and top defenseman Adam Fox, have undoubtedly contributed to the team's woes. However, many observers believe deeper issues are at play. Following the 10-2 loss to Boston, Mika Zibanejad called the performance "embarrassing," and Vincent Trocheck called for a "complete reset". Miller himself stated that the loss should "make you want to puke" and demanded a response. However, the team failed to deliver in their subsequent game against Seattle.

The pressure is mounting on Miller to turn things around. Some fans and analysts are questioning whether he is the right person to lead the team through this adversity. His post-game comments have also come under scrutiny, with some suggesting that he may be nursing an injury. The Rangers' struggles have led to questions about the team's direction and whether they will miss the playoffs for the second time in as many years. With the team's 100th anniversary season rapidly going downhill, the spotlight is firmly on J.T. Miller and his ability to right the ship.
