In a stunning turn of events in Karachi, Pakistan Television (PTV) has etched its name in cricket history by successfully defending the lowest-ever total in a first-class match, a record that stood for 232 years. This remarkable feat occurred during a President's Trophy match against Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL), marking an unprecedented moment in the sport.
PTV defended a meager target of 40 runs, bowling out SNGPL for a paltry 37 to secure an improbable two-run victory. The previous record dated back to 1794 when Oldfield defended a target of 41 against MCC in England. The dramatic match saw bowlers dominate, with SNGPL collapsing under pressure while chasing what appeared to be a straightforward target. PTV's bowlers exploited the favorable conditions to trigger a historic collapse, achieving one of the most remarkable defensive performances in cricket history.
The match was filled with twists and turns. PTV was bowled out for 166 in their first innings, after which SNGPL took a 72-run lead. However, PTV could only manage 111 in their second innings. What followed was an unexpected batting collapse from SNGPL, who were unable to chase down the small target of 40.
The chief architect of PTV's historic victory was Ali Usman, a left-arm spinner, who claimed six wickets for a mere nine runs. Amad Butt, a pacer, provided crucial support, taking four wickets for 28. The conditions deteriorated on the third day, contributing to the batting side's collapse. Shan Masood, Pakistan's Test captain and SNGPL's captain, was dismissed for a duck. Saifullah Bangash's 14 was the highest score for SNGPL.
Cricket historians and analysts have described the result as unprecedented in the modern era, emphasizing how rare it is for such a low total to be defended in a recognized first-class match. This victory has propelled Pakistan TV to second place in the President's Trophy standings, while Sui Northern has dropped to third after four games.
Ali Usman's performance continues his strong form from the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2025/26, where he took 48 wickets in eight matches.
The President's Trophy final is scheduled between February 8 and 12, with the top two teams from the seven-match group stage qualifying.
