Jodhpur Polo's Rise: Exploring the transformation of the city into the heart of Indian Polo.

Jodhpur, often called the "Blue City," has increasingly become recognized as the "Mecca" of Indian polo, a testament to its rich equestrian heritage and commitment to the sport. This transformation is rooted in history, revitalized by royal patronage, and sustained by a passion that permeates the city.

The seeds of Jodhpur's polo legacy were sown in 1889 when Sir Pratap, the younger brother of the Maharaja of Jodhpur, invited Col. Stuart Beatson of the Bengal Lancers to help raise the Jodhpur Lancers. This marked the introduction of modern polo to Jodhpur, and the Rathores embraced the sport with zeal. By the turn of the century, Jodhpur had become a prominent polo center, boasting numerous polo grounds and rivalling Calcutta, the oldest polo club in the world, in the number of players. The Jodhpur team's success in international tournaments, including their wins at Hurlingham and Ranelagh in 1897, further solidified their reputation. Legends like Sir Pratap, Maharaj Col. Prem Singh, Rao Raja Hanut Singh, and Col. Kishan Singh became synonymous with Jodhpur polo.

After a period of decline, His Highness Maharaja Gajsingh II spearheaded the revival of polo in Jodhpur in 1993. He relaunched the Jodhpur team and, in 2000, established a new grass polo ground, managed by the Maharaja Gaj Singh Sports Foundation. This marked a turning point, setting Jodhpur on the path to becoming the "Mecca" of Indian polo. His son, Yuvraj Shivraj Singh, further contributed to this resurgence by leading the Jodhpur Eagles team to victories in India and abroad.

Today, Jodhpur's polo season, held annually from December to January, draws players, patrons, and enthusiasts from around the globe. The Maharaja Gaj Singh Sports Foundation Polo Ground serves as the epicenter of the action, hosting a series of tournaments, including the H.H. Maharaja of Jodhpur Cup, the Rajputana and Central India Cup, and the Maharaja of Jodhpur Golden Jubilee Cup. These events showcase both established and emerging talent, fostering a competitive yet vibrant atmosphere.

The city's commitment to polo extends beyond the playing field. The Jodhpur Polo and Equestrian Institute (JPEI) plays a crucial role in promoting the sport and nurturing young talent. Moreover, Jodhpur's unique blend of royal legacy, cultural heritage, and genuine hospitality creates an unparalleled experience for participants and spectators alike. As Maharaja Gajsingh II noted, Jodhpur's allure lies not only in its polo tournaments but also in its "genuine warmth and camaraderie".

The 26th Jodhpur Polo Season 2025, which ran from December 10, 2025, to January 17, 2026, continued this tradition of excellence. Optiemus Achievers dominated the season, securing back-to-back titles in the Maharaja of Jodhpur Cup and the Rajputana and Central India Cup. Frederique Constant, the Swiss luxury watchmaker, joined as the Official Time Partner, underscoring the event's prestige and global appeal.

Jodhpur's rise as the "Mecca" of Indian polo is a story of historical legacy, royal patronage, and unwavering passion. While other cities like Jaipur also contribute to the sport, Jodhpur's unique confluence of sport, culture, and heritage sets it apart. As the city continues to nurture its equestrian traditions and welcome players and enthusiasts from around the world, its position as the heart of Indian polo seems secure.
