Brentford and Crystal Palace navigated their way into the League Cup's last 16 after securing penalty shoot-out victories. Meanwhile, Grimsby Town continued their impressive run in the competition.

Brentford faced Aston Villa in a Premier League clash that ended in a 1-1 draw. Harvey Elliott, a recent loan signing from Liverpool, scored his first goal for Villa. Aaron Hickey responded with a superb volley for Brentford. With the score level after 90 minutes, the match went to penalties, where Brentford triumphed 4-2. Brentford goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson saved spot kicks from John McGinn and Matty Cash, while Mikkel Damsgaard converted the winning penalty.

Crystal Palace also progressed to the fourth round after a penalty shoot-out against Millwall. Chris Richards scored in the 72nd minute to give Palace the lead, but Ryan Leonard's late goal in stoppage time leveled the score. Despite Jean-Philippe Mateta missing a golden opportunity to win the game, Crystal Palace secured a 4-2 victory in the penalty shoot-out, with debutant goalkeeper Walter Benitez saving two penalties.

Grimsby Town, a fourth-tier team, continued their remarkable League Cup journey with a 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday. Jaze Kabia's headed goal in the 49th minute secured Grimsby's place in the fourth round for the first time in 24 years. This victory follows their previous upset against Manchester United.

Aston Villa's struggles continued as they were eliminated from the League Cup. Unai Emery's team has had a slow start to the season, failing to score in their first four Premier League games. Despite Harvey Elliott breaking the deadlock, they couldn't secure a win against Brentford.

The League Cup third round continues with Nottingham Forest playing Swansea, with other matches scheduled for the following week.
