Lionel Messi's participation in the 2026 World Cup has been a subject of much discussion, but his Argentina teammate, Cristian Romero, has confidently stated that Messi will "easily" be fit to participate. Romero dismissed concerns about Messi's fitness, asserting that the Inter Miami star will shine on the global stage.

Messi, who turned 38 in June, has acknowledged that his fitness could determine whether he represents Argentina in the next World Cup. He has missed some games for Inter Miami this season as his workload is carefully managed to prevent injuries. Despite these concerns, coaches and teammates remain confident in his ability to participate in the World Cup.

Romero emphasized Messi's fitness and his place in football history, stating, "I can answer about Leo, I think he's fit, I think he could easily take part. It's his decision. We all enjoy playing with him, we all enjoy watching him play. For me, and for people who know about football, I think he's the biggest player in history". He also expressed his joy in sharing the dressing room with Messi and their shared experiences. "I love having him as a teammate in the dressing room and sharing moments with him. We've had some very happy times together. Of course, I think he's going to be right for the World Cup. Of course he is".

Messi himself has said he thinks about playing in the next World Cup but will consider his health before making a final decision. "The truth is, if you stop and think about it, it feels far away, but at the same time, time flies. … I'll see how I feel. Of course I think about it, but I don't want to set goals either," Messi said.

While acknowledging the World Cup is still far away, Romero stressed the importance of focusing on the present. "When I'm with the national team, it's still a long time before we start thinking about the World Cup. Lots of months ahead before that comes into the frame. It's all about concentrating on Tottenham," Romero said.

Messi recently hinted that his international retirement may be near, calling his last World Cup qualifier on Argentine soil a "special" moment. He holds the record for the most caps (194) and goals (114) for Argentina.

Meanwhile, Messi's club future is also uncertain, with Inter Miami reportedly interested in extending his contract. His decision will likely influence how he manages his career leading up to 2026.

Another Argentina teammate, Nicolás Otamendi, has also expressed confidence that Messi will participate in the 2026 World Cup. Messi's Inter Miami teammate and close friend, Luis Suárez, shares this sentiment.

Despite previously suggesting that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar would be his last, Argentina's victory seems to have changed his perspective. Messi has called for patience when discussing his future. He said that this year would be important to "be able to play with continuity, to feel good".

Looking ahead, Messi's immediate focus is on the 2025 season with Inter Miami, including the Club World Cup. He will also need to consider his fitness and health as he approaches the World Cup, which begins on June 10, 2026.
