The Edmonton Oilers are facing a significant test of their goaltending depth as newly acquired netminder Tristan Jarry has been placed on injured reserve. The announcement came Friday, a day after Jarry left the Oilers' 3-1 victory over the Boston Bruins with an apparent lower-body injury.
Jarry appeared to injure himself while pushing across the crease late in the second period. He stopped 12 of 13 shots before exiting the game. Shortly after, the Oilers announced that Jarry was heading back to Edmonton for further evaluation. Coach Kris Knoblauch admitted uncertainty regarding the severity of the injury.
In response to Jarry's injury, the Oilers have recalled goaltender Connor Ingram from their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. Ingram will join the team to back up Calvin Pickard, who stopped all 12 shots he faced in relief of Jarry against the Bruins.
This is not the only roster move for the Oilers, as forward Jack Roslovic has been moved to long-term injured reserve. Roslovic has been out since late November.
Jarry's placement on injured reserve comes just a week after he was acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins, along with forward Sam Poulin. The Oilers traded Stuart Skinner, Brett Kulak, and a 2029 second-round pick to Pittsburgh in exchange for Jarry and Poulin. Jarry had won all three of his starts with Edmonton, but posted a 3.08 goals-against average and a .887 save percentage. In 14 games with Pittsburgh this season, Jarry had a .909 save percentage and a 2.66 goals against average.
Ingram, 28, was acquired by the Oilers in a trade with the Utah Mammoth in early October. This season with the Bakersfield Condors, Ingram has a 4-5-2 record, a 4.04 goals-against average, and an .856 save percentage in 11 games. Prior to joining the Oilers organization, Ingram played for the Nashville Predators, Arizona Coyotes, and Utah Mammoth, amassing a 39-44-15 record, a 3.14 goals-against average, a .902 save percentage and seven shutouts over 102 NHL games. In 2023-24, Ingram had a career-best season with Arizona, leading to him being awarded the Bill Masterton Trophy.
With Jarry sidelined, the Oilers may need to explore the trade market for goaltending help. According to Elliotte Friedman, the Oilers have previously expressed interest in Buffalo Sabres goalie Alex Lyon.
The Oilers are currently on a road trip and will face the Minnesota Wild on Saturday. They will then face the Vegas Golden Knights and Calgary Flames before the holiday break.
